Artists projects / current / in development / publications and multiple from Locus+ Paintings by Cornelia Hesse-Honegger After Chernobyl & The Futures Mirror Middlesbrough Art Gallery April - May 31 t:+44 (0) 1642 247 445 f:+44 (0) 1642 813 781 Since 1986 Cornelia Hesse-Honegger has travelled extensively in Europe to document the effects of the fallout from the Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine as well as Three Mile Island in the US and Sellafield in the UK. She collects hundreds of specimens of insects from the perimeters of nuclear power installations. Each insect is examined and the point of collection recorded. Cornelia's hyper-realist aquarelles record any observed morphological changes. Her studies of insects affected by the radiation plume, which make up the exhibitions , show some mutation (s). These exhibitions of over 80 images raises questions concerning the effects of fall out in the environment. Nach Chernobyl includes some new works, never before seen, and some specially commissioned watercolours/prints showing specimens collected from the around the Sellafield Nuclear Plant in Cumbria. The Futures Mirror is an exhibition of completely new paintings of insects from power stations in the Canton of Aargau in Switzerland. After studying at the Commercial Art School in Zurich, Hesse-Honegger completed her training at the Zoological Institute of the University of Zurich, the Zoological Station in Naples and the Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. Her detailed studies are in the tradition of the stunning images produced by explorers, scientists and artists who recorded the wildlife of both chartered and unchartered regions around the world before the use of photography. These paintings and prints of insects encompass an undeniable technical beauty, whilst at the same time raising complex issues about the role of the artist in charting the often invisible decline in the environment. In her words: "It is important for me," says Hesse-Honegger, "to show my worries in the form of pictures. The strict discipline of following nature in my paintings, the accuracy in the drawing and the colours, as seen through the microscope, helps people understand the danger we are in." This show goes to Nottingham in the autumn but we are seeking collaborative partners to exhibit these paintings in other places next year, anyone interested or may know suitable contacts please contact us at the address below. A couple of images are on our web site. We have produced a small booklet for school groups that includes an interview and other information. I can mail this to any one interested.
