Nettimers, I don’t think I’ve posted here before, but this was Steve’s space, so it feels like the right place to share. When he was a visiting professor at NYU, I took a grad class with Steve. It was on starting collectives. This was back in 2010. In one of the early classes, he laughed at the MTA PSAs "if you see something, say something". I see stuff all the time, he said. Our first and only assignment was to form collectives and make the kind of art that breaks the law. We stole tiny soaps from hotels, put up stickers on the W4 subway platform, hung up posters on public property, and protested in front of the Museum of Natural History. There was no syllabus or assigned readings. It was probably the most important class I've ever taken. It’s how I became a media maker. Thank you, Steve. Rest in power.
