Statement Concerning Terrorist Attacks and Reactions

Deeply shocked and terrified by an act of ultimate violence whose victims were innocent people, we join in the condemnation of terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Terrorism can not rectify injustice, neither it can contribute to a better and more just world. Suffering and unbearable
living conditions of the majority of humankind will not vanish by the increase of suffering for everyone.

Terrorist attacks on USA evoked numerous reactions in the whole world. In local media we can see and hear various military experts, theoreticians, politicians, experts on history who claim they know what happened, why and what will follow. Unfortunately, the voices who do not accept further
military actions and who invite the world on peaceful dialogue are in minority.

Croatian non-governmental organizations for human rights, peace and non-violence oppose the calls for revenge, new human victims and new violence in the name of the western democracy and civilization. We are all concerned because Croatian government officials support the calls for "civilized
revenge" and military intervention. We do not believe that by approving a war and new devastations we participate in so called civilized world or that by doing so we strengthen anybody's democracy. Experience shows that non-institutional terrorism cannot be uprooted by institutionalized terror.
We believe that terrorism can be successfully defeated only if its causes are fought against. One of the most powerful causes of terrorism is the gap between the rich and the poor which can be removed by establishing international community on just foundations. Every fundamentalism is fed on
despair. Imme

The only way out is through strengthening international legal mechanisms and international co-operation in investigation, extraditions and punishment of those responsible for terrorist acts. Such an approach is the effective one. In the case of Lockerbie, from 1988, Libya finally extradited
perpetrators who went to trial in Britain and are currently undergoing a years-long jail sentences.

We firmly demand a thorough investigation and oppose revengeful military actions. We invite all the citizens of Croatia and the world to support the establishment of peace and safety in their own families, work places, cities and states. The Republic of Croatia should initiate the demand that the
future International Criminal Court (ICC) include terrorist attacks with devastating effects on lives on its list of crimes against humanity, and starts processing them and punishing organizers and perpetrators.

Peace and co-operation is for us the only possible way towards future. In this critical moments for the entire humanity, we are encouraging all the citizens of Croatia and the world to ask themselves how can they personally contribute on the establishment of trust and safety in their own
families, work places and societies.

We invite NGO's of the world to organize a public vigil on the main city squares to mourn the victims of terrorism, to show their opposition to the use of violence and in support to democratic and non-violent dialogue.
