Internet providers on shaky ground as investors tire of waiting for profits MIKE OLIVEIRA Canadian Press Sunday, September 02, 2001 TORONTO (CP) - While most observers see the Web as a critical tool of the future, impatient investors are tiring of Internet access providers' dismal earnings. A Canadian dial-up access provider and the largest high-speed provider in the United States faced major setbacks last week, two more casualties in a burgeoning, but struggling, industry where no company - big or small - is safe. Calgary-based 3Web, which once offered "free Internet access for life," has told its last batch of non-paying customers that the free time will be over in two weeks. Advertising revenue failed to materialize to pay the bills. And on Friday, ExciteAtHome lost two of its three cable TV partners when Cox Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. terminated distribution deals. Its only remaining partner is controlling shareholder AT&T. http://www.canada.com/vancouver/story.asp?id={93BED92C-A731-4686-B02D-003892 6EF116} © Copyright 2001 The Canadian Press _______________________________________________ Nettime-bold mailing list Nettime-bold@nettime.org http://www.nettime.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/nettime-bold
